HD TV Buying Guide

How to buy an HD TV in India that fulfills your needs

Well any TV that has a screen resolution of 720 pixels or 1080 pixels and more, is known as a High Definition or an HD TV. The resolution options available today for HD TVs is 1080, 2000 (or 2K) and 4000 (or 4 K).

The difference in resolution translates into is in the size of the image that is seen on the screen. The larger the image, the better the image quality, detailing and resolution. To get an idea of what exactly the different resolutions translate into in terms of size, have a look at this comparison diagram of different resolution TV screens.

As you can see the 4K screen resolution is quite large. There are several televisions available with 4K resolution but there is limited content available in that resolution. When you buy a 4K HD TV keep that in mind.

Today, there are a lot of options, specs and features in a variety of HD TVs in the market. Here are some points to consider when choosing the right HD TV for yourself.

One of the first things you need to consider before buying an HD TV is its screen size. The screen size of a TV is measured in inches, and is the diagonal distance from one corner of the screen to the opposite corner. The simplest way to decide what size screen you need, is to consider your budget and the size of the room where you will keep the HD TV.

Here is a simple guide for what size TV screen is suitable for what viewing distance. The viewing distance is the exact distance from the screen to the place where you will sit and watch TV (the center of your sofa or couch).

If the distance between your TV screen and where you are sitting is between 6 to 8 feet, then you can go in for a TV with screen size between 15 and 21 inches for TVs with a screen size aspect ratio (ratio of the length to height) of 4:3. You can also choose a TV with screen size 17 to 26 inches with a screen size aspect ratio of 16:9.

If the distance between your TV screen and where you are sitting is between 8 to 10 feet, then you can go in for a TV with screen size between 28 and 36 inches for TVs with a screen size aspect ratio of 16:9.

If the distance between your TV screen and where you are sitting is between 10 to 12 feet, then you can go in for a TV with screen size between 36 and 42 inches for TVs with a screen size aspect ratio of 16:9.

If the distance between your TV screen and where you are sitting is between more than 12 feet, then you can go in for a TV with screen size between 40 and 50 inches for TVs with a screen size aspect ratio of 16:9.

If you buy a TV that slightly larger than you need, you can still manage, but if it is too small then you will find it uncomfortable to view.

Till some time back our only choice with HD screen resolution was 720 pixels and 1020 pixels. However, now we can choose between 1080 right up to 4K or 4000 pixels. The 4K TVs are also called Ultra HD TVs and are relatively newer. Content for 4K TVs is a little limited but it will be there everywhere soon.

In the past, your choice when picking an HDTV might have been between one with 720p resolution and 1080p resolution. Now, unless you’re shopping for a TV smaller than 30 inches—and what fun is that?—you probably won’t even see 720p as an option.

The LED TV is actually an LCD TV with LED lighting. The Plasma HD TVs are a slightly different technology and supposedly it delivers richer colours. However, the problem with Plasma TVs is that it is not going to be around for very long. The technology is going to be phased out soon.

When you buy an HD TV, it is quite important to check the number and placement of the ports. Since it is an HD TV, having a sufficient number of HDMI ports is very important, as it requires an HDMI cable to transmit the HD resolution from your set top box, cable box, blu-ray player, gaming console or other video streaming or playing devices.

You have to have enough HDMI ports for cables from each of these devices to connect to the TV. It is also good to have HDMI ports on the sides and the back. Typically your HD TV should have at least 4 HDMI ports, if not more. If you are buying a smart TV, then you need to see whether it has wi-fi connectivity and whether there is an ethertnet port to connect your broadband internet cable. Having USB port is also an advantage as you can then play music, and see images and videos directly by plugging in your pen drive into the HD TV. An option that is gaining popularity in India is the Google Chromecast, and the newer versions requires and HDMI port and a USB port.

In simple terms, the refresh rate is how frequently the screen recreates the image which is then seen as moving video. The refresh rate is measured in hertz or Hz, and the higher the refresh rate in Hz, the smoother the motion and video.

For your HD TV try to get a refresh rate of 120 Hz or higher. Most of the larger screen HD TVs have 120 HZ, but some of the smaller ones may still have a 60 Hz. The ideal refresh rate is 240 Hz, which delivers a great viewing experience. Many HD TVs also have a refresh rate of 480 Hz, but there is very little difference between 240 HZ and 480 Hz.

There is a mixed reaction amongst people about 3D capable TVs. What has been seen is that 3D is great at the beginning but after a while people just abandon it, as the novelty wears off, and the glasses start to become a bother.

If you are very keen on 3D, by all means go in for a 3D HD TV but be aware that it is more successful in the big theatre screen then on TV screens at home.

If you are really into the image quality and like to refine and experiment with it, then ensure that the HD TV has ample settings options like the white balance and colour amangement.

Now that you know the main points about buying an HD TV, go right ahead and make a choice from the most popular and bestselling HD TVS in India.
