Want to buy the Surface Pro 4? Read this review first - you may change your mind!

The fourth generation Microsoft Surface is better than its previous avataars, but is it really so much better that it justifies the higher price? The Surface Pro 4 is Microsoft's latest laptop-tablet hybrid that has maintained the same standards and path breaking concepts that the previous ones did. In shape and size, the Surface Pro 4 is a little thinner and lighter than the previous generation model, and its processor is a newer generation Intel one, and surprisingly more economical than the previous one.

As an expert on tablets and all things Microsoft the one change that I noticed and liked was the new version of Type Cover. The Type Cover 4 is so good that frankly it feels better than most good laptops. Now that is saying something. It means that the Surface Pro 4 can be as comfortable as a great laptop and as tablet-y as any other good tablet. Which means best of both worlds.

Let's cut to the chase and let me give you my final verdict right in the beginning

In the fewest words - it is a good version of Surface but its less than optimal battery life and the inconvenience of Windows 10 in the tablet mode makes it not worthwhile. Whoa - I've come out with it. Microsoft won't like me for this but this is what I feel. You can of course form your own opinion on the Surface Pro 4, but if I were you I would go in for a previous version and enjoy the same experience at a lower price.

That said what I really liked about the Surface Pro 4 is the Type Cover 4, which is really good in all ways. But again the bad part is that the Type Cover 4 is not covered in the price of the Surface Pro 4. You have to buy it separately and it costs 6 thousand for the regular one and 14 thousand for the one with fingerprint recognition, which by the way is a very cool and nifty feature on the Type Cover 4.

The Good

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 has a very smart and crisp screen which shows colours and images awesomely

It is undeniably fast

It is lighter and thinner than the previous version

The Type Cover 4 is absolutely terrific, and better than most good laptops in terms of typing comfort

The Bad

The Windows 10 Tablet Mode is not too great an experience

The Type Cover 4 is not included in the price of the Surface 4

Its battery life is not too great

It's truly in between a tablet and a laptop - when it comes to the weight

If you look at the Surface Pro 4 as a tablet you will feel that it is too heavy. Yet when you think of it as a laptop you'll feel that it is too light. So where does that place the Microsoft Surface 4? Bang in between a tablet and laptop, which is where it wants to be. Incidentally the exact weight of the Surface Pro 4 is 777 grams. As we discussed before, the Surface Pro 4 is lighter than the Pro 3 and also thinner. The thickness of the Surface Pro 4 is 8.6 mm. This is not incredibly thin nor too thick, but a pretty comfortable thickness to hold it work on it comfortably.

Turning the Surface Pro 4 into a laptop - it's rad kickstand

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 has a very robust and useful kickstand. It is well designed and falls into place easily. It is what turns the Surface Pro 4 into a laptop and it truly does the job well. You will never feel that the Surface Pro 4 is any less than a laptop expect of course when you want to actually place it on your lap - then the laptop sits better. So, the kickstand gets my full marks and is very well designed.

Screen Quality and Performance

When you are working on a device with a great screen it feels really good. The surface Pro 4 has a screen that is absolutely awesome. It has a 267 pixels per inch resolution, and the colour reproduction is excellent. The display is sharp, the brightness and contrast are optimal, and the overall effect is stunning.  The imagery comes out vivid and bright and the colours just pop out. You will enjoy watching great images or video on the Microsoft Surface Pro 4. The battery and the OS may disappoint at some time but the screen won't.

Typing and touch pad-ding blissfully - the Type Cover 4

I have already raved about the Type Cover 4 before, so I will elaborate a little bit here. The best part about the Type Cover 4 isn't the keypads, it is the touch pad. The keys of the Type Cover 4 are comfortably spaced apart and have a great feel. You feel that the keys are easy to use and they have a very fine touch too. Overall the typing experience is as good as any good laptop. The touch pad in the Surface Pro 4 is much larger than in the previous versions and is really convenient to use. So, in effect the Type Cover 4 makes the Surface Pro 4 a very efficient laptop. Also a great thing about the Type Cover 4 is that it will work with the Surface Pro 3. Yeah, another reason to go in for a previous version and use the Type Cover 4 with it!

The Fingerprint Scanner version of the Type Cover 4 is wonderful

I think I won't be able to stop writing about the Type Cover 4. It also has a fingerprint scanner variant, that is much more expensive but might be worth the price. The fingerprint scanner enables you to sign in with fingerprint technology, making the Surface Pro 4 infallibly safe to use. Since the tech is really good, using the fingerprint scanner to sign in is a breeze, and it also  integrates with the LastPass application. This nifty fingerprint scanner is located to the right of the touch pad and whenever I used it, I found it to be super accurate and fast.

You might balk at the extra cost of the fingerprint scanner version. Well the regular Type Cover 4 is around 6,200, while the fingerprint scanner version is around 14,500. That is a big difference in terms of price. It will make sense for you to buy it, if you are regular user of the Surface pro 4. If you use it every day and in fact it is an essential part of your work paraphernelia, then go for the Type Cover 4 with fingerprint scanner.  Take a look at the latest updated prices of both the Type Cover 4 versions below.

The Surface Pen - much more than surface deep

The Surface Pen has been made for the Microsoft Surface Pro 4, and it is expected that it will work beautifully with it. However, beyond working perfectly with the Surface pro 4, it is also much more than just a touch pen. After using it for many things including some very bad digital art attempts, I feel that it is a very finely crafted pressure sensitive device that will let you work with great fineness. And unlike me, if you can actually create visual works of art, then you will be able to create some great digital art with the Surface Pen.  The Surface Pro 4 has a very convenient magnetic strip to its side where the Surface Pen can be quickly and easily attached when not in use.  Oh, and one more thing, the Surface Pen is not included in the price (you already knew that right!).

And coming to Windows 10 on Surface Pro 4 - bleh blah!

Why is the Windows 10 Tablet Mode so inconvenient? No, really they should have paid more attention to this important detail and done thousands of usability test and come up with something better. really when I use the tablet mode on the Surface Pro 4, here are the difficulties I face:

Many of the icons are too small to use easily with touch - really that was one of the first things to fix in a tablet mode. But there you have it, I found them too small and difficult to use.
Some of the applications become plain difficult to navigate and use in the tablet mode. Hey it even extends to a common app like YouTube. When you are using touch you need intuitive movement and placement, this is missing in several apps, and it feels like the whole tablet mode hasn't been given the finishing touches it needs.
All in all the tablet mode is disappointing. But hey, you can always switch to the desktop mode and cruise along. If you are planning to buy the Surface pro 4. then don't be too perturbed, you can always use the Windows mode from the Surface mode. And to do that all you need to do is press the power button. THen an optin will aper saying 'Exit Surface Mode'.  Just tap on nit and you are out.
