The VR scene is hotting up – here’s what’s in store

Two technologies that are on fire right now are VR and AR. They are merging and evolving on their own. In the VR arena some exciting new VR headsets are coming into the market, either as upgraded version or as new launches. Though VR is going to be driving this area, it is AR or augmented reality that is going to shape the big awesome future.

In this post we will look at some of the best VR headsets that we can explore in 2018 and beyond.

Interestingly, though Oculus is the brand that set the VR headsets world on fire, it is Sony with the Playstaion VR headset that has sold in immense numbers today. The sales of the Sony Playstation VR is significantly more than Oculus Rift and HTC Vive sales together.

Though VR is picking up, it has not become an enormous thing because of one slight drawback, the wire that connects the VR Headset to the device that is feeding it the VR content. The future of VR headsets is wireless. The problem with VR headsets going wireless is that the heavy VR content does not flow seamlessly. However this problem is getting solved even as you read this article. A company called Rivvr is already working towards creating a device, which is in prototype stage, which will convert existing HTC Vive and Oculus Rift VR headsets into wireless VR headsets.

The VR Headsets that are selling in the biggest numbers are the ones that use smartphone inside them and use that smartphone as the VR content device. We are talking about the Google Cardboard VR headset and everything in between it and the Oculus Rift. This also includes the Samsung Gear VR headset. The Samsung Gear headset is highly popular with all the Samsung smartphones and has sold in millions all over the world. In this same zone is the Google Daydream View. The price of the Daydream is around $75 now. The Samsung Gear VR Headset is in the range of $120.

When the Oculus Rift launched it was extremely expensive, and it was a huge investment to get one. Today the Oculus Rift along with the Touch System is for just $399. The high end VR headsets are slowly but surely coming into the range of mass adoption. The Touch System of the Oculus Rift enables the user to engage with the special Touch hand gear.

Oculus is soon going to come out with two new version the Oculus Go and the Oculus Santa Cruz headsets. These are going to be stand alone headsets which will not be tethered i.e. they will not have wires. Oculus Go and Santa Cruz should be hitting the commercial market sometime in 2019, and that’s when VR will go truly wireless. HTC has the Vive Focus that already launched in China. This is also a wireless VR Headset.

Sony with its Playsation VR Headset is also working on the next level. The ne Sony Playstation VR headsets will have much better quality content but will still have wires. We feel that it will not be long when wireless VR headsets will enter the market in a big way, whether it is for gaming or overall virtual reality content.

These VR headsets are available in every part of the world, whether you are in a developing country or in a remote part of Asia. You will be able to buy the best VR Headset in India as easily from Amazon India as you will be able to buy it in the United States.

Another problem that VR Headsets are facing when it comes to being adopted in large numbers by people is that the top end ones like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive require high end computers for their content. This adds even more cost to an already expensive device.

The way ahead is to create standalone VR headsets that will neither have wires nor the need for a high performing computer to deliver content.

Many industry experts feel that the way ahead is VR and AR, and more specifically AR will have a bigger market than VR in the future. Apple has not entered into the VR market, but it has plans with the AR market. A new AR device from Apple is already in the works, and may see the light of a commercial launch in 2019.

May of the gurus predict that AR has a bigger future as it overcomes one of the biggest drawbacks of VR headsets. VR by definition requires the eyes to be covered and also becomes quite bulky. Generally people are not comfortable with their eyes completely covered and end up feeling somewhat vulnerable. This can be fully resolved by the AR headsets that will come out soon.

Augmented Reality means that your AR glasses will be transparent, and will add a virtual world to what you already see around you. This is great as it will allow people to engage with each other while being part of a virtual world that augments their real one.

What we have to see is what the VR AR world is going to unveil in a few years time. For now, VR is the rage, but AR may soon overtake it.
