Cardboard VR Headsets versus Plastic VR Headsets

Google Cardboard inspired VR Headsets

These are very cheap and range in the low hundreds. Not surprisingly they are quite basic and you need to fold and assemble them. They have no straps so you have to hold them up, and they are also uncomfortable. However, all you need is a smartphone and you are good to go with a few hundred rupees. All things considered, they do come very cheap, so this should be your option if you merely want to test out what a VR headset is all about and don't want to spend money. The Cardboard VR headsets are not going to give you an immersive experience or let you watch virtual reality for more than a few minutes at a time, as you have to hold them up.

Plastic VR Headsets

The plastic VR headsets have padding and come with a strap, so you do not need to hold them up with your hands. They come with varying degrees of comfort and features. The most basic plastic VR headsets have a plastic casing and strap to hold your phone, slightly better ones will have a lens adjustment knob which will enable you to bring the lens closer or farther form the smartphone's screen to see a sharper image, and finally the more expensive ones will come with a bluetooth controller which will let you interact with the virtual reality experience. The main advantage of the plastic VR headsets is that they are comfortable and enable a more immersive virtual reality experience by shutting off external light. Also you can play games or engage with virtual reality content with the bluetooth controller. The slight downside is that they are not specifically designed for any particular model of smartphone.

The Procus PRO VR Headset is a pretty big improvement on the previous model and is a cut above the rest of the VR Headsets in this price range.

Built-in headphones

The new enhanced design of the Procus PRO has headphones built-in, which can be adjusted to your needs. They can be pulled back and forth to adjust to your ears, and they have good padding for comfort. The sound quality is also quite good. The overall build of the headphones is quite robust and the sound quality is good. Adjusting the headphones to sit comfortably on your ear is quite easy, and the soft padding is comfortable even for slightly longer periods of use. The soft memory foam padding also enables noise cancelling for an even more immersive experience.

The enhanced field of view of the Procus PRO VR Headset delivers an exhilarating VR experience. With a 120 degree field of view, you can literally see with a field of view like your own eyes. Here is a diagram showing the advantage of a 120 degree field of view.

Audio Jack

The audio jack that has to be plugged into the smartphone is placed inside the slot where the phone has to be placed. The wire for the audio jack is of the right length so that there is no problem in placing the phone with the jack in it. The wire extends easily. This audio jack is what enables the wearer to listen to the audio coming from the smartphone in the built-in headphones. The gyroscope enables the phone to align the screen to whatever way you are holding the phone. For example if you are holding it vertically, the screen will flip to the vertical view, and if you rotate the phone and view it horizontally, the screen will adjust to the horizontal view. This is necessary for you to be able to view virtual reality content on a VR Headset.

The Procus PRO VR Headset comes with a really cool feature that eliminates the need for an additional Bluetooth controller or magnetic clippers to interact with the smartphone. A touch button on the headset which acts as a mechanical touch button for the phone enables you to interact with the smartphone while you are watching VR content. This switch will enable you to take a call just by pressing it, and you do not need to take the phone out of the headset at all as the sound will come through the in-built headphones. Just press the button and can easily take a call, or engage with games. The Procus PRO comes with all the usual controls for VR Headsets. It has a round knobs on the sides of the VR headset to control the distance of the smartphone from your eyes. It has an easy to use dial controller that adjusts the distance between the two lens, which is also called inter pupillary distance (IPD).There is a volume control switch that works very effectively. Reviews of Best VR Headsets in India

The top best VR Headsets of India in 2017 range from the lower cost Google cardboard inspired ones to mid-range plastic headsets to the high-end branded VR Headset.

Here are reviews of the best of them available in India, with a special emphasis on consumer feedback and features.

best-vr-headset-in-india-merge-vr-headset-top-vr-headset

Merge VR headset – Higher-range VR Headset – Rs. 10,000 +

Make
It has a colourful frame made of antimicrobial material and is compatible with almost all Android and iOS smartphones. Along with virtual reality it also has augmented reality capabilities. Made of a squeezable hard foam like anti-microbial material, Merge VR has a very smart look with its purple get up. It lets you play virtual reality apps, games and video and also has augmented reality capabilities, meaning it can add virtual elements and information to the real world around you. It has input buttons that enable the user to position the lenses and the bumpers on the sides. It has individual sliders controlling the lenses that allow you to quickly adjust the headset to your powered eyesight.

Compatibility
The smartphone slides into place in the slot directly behind the faceplate of the phone. It has openings on the sides for access to your smartphone’s various ports. To prevent fogging and allow circulation, it has two holes at the top. The Merge VR headset can be used with both Android and Apple smartphones and can comfortably fit phones of all sizes from as small as an iPhone 5 to the larger iPhone 6s Plus sizes.

Comfort
It fits easily and comfortably on your head with black Velcro bands. It measures 8.3 x 4.8 x 6.5 inches and weighs 340 grams. It is comfortable to wear, but over longer periods of time, the headset presses into your face a little.

Apps etc.
The Merge VR apps are available at the Merge Start website, and most apps, games, experiences, music and educational offerings are free. Merge VR also plays apps from Google Cardboard, including Street View and Google Cardboard Camera, and supports content from Jaunt VR, VRSE, Discovery VR and YouTube VR.

To use the apps or games, your smartphone has to be configured for VR, which is a pretty simple process. When you launch the Google Cardboard app, you’ll need to scan a QR code for your particular headset. That code is available at the bottom of the Merge Start website. Once this code is scanned by your smartphone, you are ready to use the VR apps and games.

The Merge VR uses your smartphone’s display, processor and battery. Virtual reality drains more battery than watching a normal movie.

Overall
A great choice offering a great virtual reality experience on all phones at a reasonable price

The Merge VR works perfectly with all recent makes and models of Android and Apple smartphones, delivers virtual reality and augmented reality, has a relatively soft body that is durable and antimicrobial, looks very smart, and with Google Cardboard offers something for everyone with most of the content being free.

best-vr-headset-in-india-procus-vr-headset-top-vr-headset

Procus VR headset – Mid-Range VR Headset – Rs. 2,000 +

Make
The Procus VR headset has a firm plastic body with the Procus logo in the front. It has a good build and the headset feels sturdy. It does not have the finish of the Merge VR headset but it is stylish and sleek looking. The lenses are of good quality, come with a protective film on them, and have been specially designed to prevent eye strain. The front is a lid that is held in place by strong magnets and houses the smartphone. The place where the smartphone is held in place has foam so that the phone stays in place and also no buttons get pressed by mistake. It has spaces on the sides of the front panel for plugging in the earphones and the charger of the phone.

It has a controller for moving the lenses to adjust to the distance between the eyes, which helps in focusing on the screen. The distance between the lens is adjusted through a slider on top of the headset, and there is a rotating knob which enables the entire apparatus to move closer or further away from the eyes to make adjustments to the best distance for viewing.

Compatibility
The specification say that it supports all mobile phones with screen sizes ranging from 3.5 inches to 6 inches. However, as you will realise on using the headset, any mobile phone which is less than 4.5 inches does not give a very satisfactory virtual reality experience. It weighs 630 grams and its dimensions are 20.5 cms x 14 cms x 10 cms.

Comfort
There is a soft cushioning on the side where it is fitted on to the face. This cushioning ensures that there is no pressure on the eyes. The headset is held in place by Velcro straps and there is a notch where the nose fits into the headset. This gap for the nose sometimes allows a little light to enter, but is not a problem as such.

Apps etc.
You can install any of the VR apps in the Google Playstore, and the variety is huge and growing every day. There are some really interesting ones like Insidious 3D and the Roller Coaster that one must experience. If your smartphone has a built-in gyroscope then you can also enjoy 360 degree virtual reality videos that are available on YouTube. Procus is developing games and apps specifically for Procus users which will range from horror experiences to children’s to educational. They will be free for Procus users but be paid for others.

Overall
For its low price this is an excellent VR Headset and unless you are looking for the bells and whistles of the premium brands you should go for the Procus VR headset.

best-vr-headset-in-india-vr-kit-headset-top-vr-headset

VR Kit cardboard headset – Low-cost Google cardboard inspired VR Headset – Rs. 200 +

Make
The VR Kit headset is made from a material similar to cardboard but stronger and more durable. This headset is inspired from the original Google Cardboard, and is actually a foldable box with a pair of lenses in it. You cannot expect much at this price point, so we feel that this is the best headset for first timers who want to experience virtual reality on their smartphones.

The VR Kit headset has a box structure that is opened on one end to place the smartphone and on the other end there is a pair of lenses. There is an elastic band to hold it in place but in actual use one will have to hold on to the front of the box, to ensure that the smartphone does not come out while moving the head and get damaged. There are two small patches of Velcro to hold the lid and the phone in place.

Watch a video of a Google Cardboard inspired headset here.

The headset has some cushioning for the nose but you cannot watch it for too long. The edges of the box shape also trouble the skin on slightly longer viewing. Like all cardboard inspired VR headsets it is a very basic design with nothing but a shell to hold the phone and the lenses.

Most users say that the lenses are of average quality but sometimes they have arrived scratched and they also get smudged easily.

Compatibility
The VR Kit version 1.2 is compatible with phones up to a size of 5.5 inches, which means you can use most smartphones with it. It weighs 136 grams and its dimensions are 13.5 cms x 10 cms x 8 cms.

Comfort
There is not much in the VR Kit by way of comfort, but for its price it is a very good headset. There is some basic cushioning where the box will rest on the bridge of your nose, and the material itself is better than simple cardboard. It is a basic quality headset that should only be used as an entry level option for first timers.

Apps etc.
As with all Google Cardboard inspired VR headsets there are many apps on the Google Playstore and you can also watch VR videos from YouTube but there is nothing specifically for this VR headset. You will get the full range of the virtual reality experience but without too much comfort or a truly immersive experience.

Overall
This is an excellent choice if you want a basic entry-level experience of virtual reality, and amongst the headsets in this price range this would our first choice.
